Hi All,

Was trying to find a decent thread on tank dividers for large tanks, but all i seem to find is dividers for smaller tanks.

I dont need one now, as my Moba's are still young, but would like to know what other people use to seperate females that are holding or seperate injured fish other than removing from the tank.

Could you point me in the right direction.

Thanks
Marc

yeah mate you can use some perspex cut to size with lots of little holes drilled in it or cut a bigger bit out and use some plastic fly screen
to cover the hole then i just use a few rocks on each side to hold it in place. It has worked fine for me in the past.
When you put it in put it on a angle then straighten it up for a snug fit!

I use this stuff for tank dividers:

It's 30mm polypropylene drainage cell normall used for things like under-paver drainage.
Comes in 600mmx400mm sheets that interlock (and cable-tied to hold them together) and can be cut to size and shape with a saw.

It ends up making a wall 30mm thick through which water can flow easily but biugger fish can't (I attach gutter gaurd or flywire for smaller fish).
being 30mm thick it's nice and stable when slotted into a tank so doesn't need separate supports to keep it in place.

I got the idea once upon a time from a local tank builder that was using it to make undergravel filters and plenums for big tanks.

Well, I made some tank dividers over the weekend out of perspex as i couldnt find any eggcrate material or the drainage cell.

I used a hacksaw to cut the perspex, the teeth on a hacksaw are fine and you are less likely to fracture the perspex using a hacksaw. The edges were sanded to remove any sharp edges.

On the edges which shall slide against the glass, i used some airline and made a cut so that it could be opened up, then placed over the perspex edge to prevent any scratching of the glass and help with a tight fit. Even though it didnt really need it, i siliconed the airline to the perspex. Photo is attached.

Couple of questions:

  • Do you think i have enough holes? They would be at 2-3cm centres throughout the whole sheet.
  • Should i roughen up the faces of the perspex with sandpaper so that it wont be clear for the fish to look through?
  • Can anyone recommend a secondary fixing method (as we arent dealing with small fish here)? I was thinking of siliconing some offcuts of 20mm conduit to the perspex (say 4cm long at alternate coners, so 4 pieces) and using the sucker and bracket from heaters fix the tank divider to the glass. The only problem with this is the conduits would need to be fixed in the exact position so the sucker would be in contact with the glass. And if the divider didnt sit exactly perpendicular to the glass i could have issues with the conduit and sucker connection not working. Another thought is an L-bracket fixed to the perspex with a hole in the bracket to push a sucker though which would be in contact with the glass, still thinking on the type of L-bracket to use.
Cheers.
